Whether it’s because of climate change or a natural heat cycle, these past few British Summers have been hotter than usual. This can be seen in 2019 when the hottest temperature ever was recorded in the UK when it rose to 38.7C in Cambridge. Below is a list of eight great ways to beat the heat during the Summer.
Wear Appropriate Clothing
This might seem obvious but what we wear can affect our internal temperature. When doing any sports but especially during summer heatwaves, it is important to wear clothes that help you to lose heat instead of keeping it in. Black clothing can absorb the Sun’s heat, which in turn can overheat the wearer. Florence net and airflow sports stretch are types of lightweight fabric with lots of stretches so are good options for clothing material.
Bring a cooler
If you are going to the local park or even just your back garden, a cooler is perfect for those hot sunny days. It is important to stay hydrated when doing sports during the Summer so keeping a cooler on a hand full of chilled drinks as well as healthy foods like fruits and yogurts are a great way to remain healthy.
Water Sports
Trying a sport that takes place in the water can be a great way to keep active whilst staying cool. There is plenty to try in the sea such as surfing, snorkeling, or wakeboarding. Just remember to keep an eye on the tide and wind warnings, and if it’s your first try then definitely ask for lessons from a professional. If going out to sea seems a bit daunting, then you can always try swimming in an outdoor pool instead.
Wear Sunscreen
Again, this is something that should seem obvious but by the numerous sunburns, you see on people during the Summer it clearly isn’t obvious enough. Sunscreen protects you from UV and UVA that can cause wrinkles and sunburn as well as more serious conditions like skin cancer which is why it is so vital that you wear it on sunny days. It is important to buy sunscreens with high SPFs such as factor 50+ however they do not last longer than those with a lower number so regardless of SPF it is vital that you reapply it every two hours.
Try Indoor Sports
Whilst it can be tempting in the Summer to spend every moment out in the glorious sunshine, taking a break from the sun’s harsh rays can also be beneficial. Doing sports in an indoor center can protect you from the UV and UVA radiation of the sun and provide some much-needed air conditioning.
Do Something New
Summer is a great way to rejuvenate after the bleakness of Winter. So why not make the most of it by trying something new? If you are lucky enough to go abroad on holiday, then why not try learning a sport native to the country you are visiting? It can be a unique, healthy, and culturally enriching experience.
Work Together as A Family
With the kids off school and adults off from work, the Summer is a perfect time to try a sport together as a family. You can do an activity you can all do together such as cycling or hiking. You could choose a sport where you are all on the same team or one where you compete against each other. Try looking at your local community or sports center to see what activities they offer to families over the Summer. There are bound to be plenty to choose from!
Wear Sunglasses
Like sunscreen, sunglasses protect our bodies from UV radiation only this time they protect your eyes. Not only are they a vital fashion accessory but they are a vital form of protection as exposing your eyes to UV light can cause serious health and sight problems.
